1- Engine Types and Their Operation
There are  many different types  of internel combustion engines. They can be classified by :
1 - Application :
Automobiles , truck , locomotive ,  light aircaft ,marine , portable power system , power generation
2 - Engine design:
Reciprocating engines which in turn subdivided  by arrangement of cylinders  for examples:
2-1  Single cylinder engine   :
2-2 In-line cylinder engine  :
2-3 Vee in-line  engine   :
Vee in-line engine
* Single cylinder engines have several advantages :

1 - It's simple design .

2 - economical construction .

3 - Balance shafts  and counterweights on  the
crankshaft must be used to balance the weight
    of reciprocating parts.
- The first inline six was produced by Napier and Sons in 1904.
- The Straight-6 is smoother than engines with a fewer
number of  cylinders because the  power strokes of
   pistons partially overlap.

- Since each power stroke lasts 180 degree of Crankshaft
rotation, while a new piston starts its power stroke every
120 degrees, there are 60 degrees of overlap on each
stroke in which one piston is finishing while the next
  is  starting .

-
in line arrangement is the most common for Automobile

engine up to about 2.5 lite  displacement.
- The V arrangement , with two banks of cylinders  provides a compact block and is used extensivlely for larger displacment engines.

-The V arrangement ,with two banks of cylinders  provides a smooth , low vibration .
