1 - Engine Types and Their Operation
1.4 - Engine  Components :
Before you study the engine component you should know  some about it's  common materials which are
used in manufacture these components .

Grey iron is a form of cast iron there are many different kinds of cast iron dependening of a particular material it contain , Gray iron is a cast iron that contains iron in the form of graphite ,silicon ,manganese  and phosphorus .

Alloy is a combination of material to form a substance that have different properties that we want to design a certain part.

The engine cylinders are containted in the
Engine block .

The engine block has traditionally been made of grey
cast iron beacause of its good wear resistance and low
cost. Passages for the cooling water are cast into the
block , Aluminum is being used is smaller si engine
blocks to reduce engine weight.

Cylinder block is the basic framework of a car engine.
It supports and holds all the other engine components.
this figure shows a typical cylinder block without an
integrated
Crankcase.

as we have metioned this is in-line  cylinder configuration with air cooling system like fins.

There are different material used for manufacturing cylinder block but there are reasons material selection
like cost , formability and  material properties like resistanse for wear , friction and  working  under  high
Thermal load.

This design factors control the manufacturing process,so the main materials we can use to product a
cylinder block are as the following :
Engine Components
Air-cooled block
Air-cooled block
Head bolt hole
Deck
Cylinder bore
Cooling fin
Air-cooled block
Cast iron cylinder block (closed deck type) including a crankcase portion :
water-cooled block
Coolant passage Crankcase
